Dentures or Implants? Here Is What You Need to Know

When you lose a tooth, one of the first questions people ask me is what now. Do I get a denture or do I get an implant? It is a very fair question and I want to break it down for you in a way that is easy to understand so that you can make the best choice for yourself.

Let me start from the beginning.

What Is a Denture?

A denture is what most people call a false tooth. It is made to look like your real tooth but the big difference is that you take it out. You remove it to clean it, you take it out at night, and you put it back in during the day.

Some people have a full denture which replaces all the teeth on the top or bottom. Some people have a partial denture which only replaces one or a few missing teeth. Either way, it is something that goes in and comes out.

What Is an Implant?

An implant is very different. It stays in your mouth permanently. Think of it like this. If someone has a problem with their hip, doctors can put in a metal hip that stays there and works just like the real one. An implant is the same idea but for your tooth.

We place a small screw into the jawbone where the missing tooth used to be. The bone grows around it and holds it in place. Then we put a crown on top of the screw and it looks and feels just like a real tooth. You brush it. You floss it. You eat with it. You forget it is even there.

Which One Is Better?

Honestly, if I had to choose for myself, I would choose an implant every single time. And I will tell you exactly why.

When you lose a tooth and do not replace it properly, the bone in that area of your jaw starts to shrink away. This is because the bone needs the pressure from a tooth to stay strong. Without that pressure it just slowly disappears. A denture sits on top of the gum but it does not do anything for the bone underneath. So the bone keeps shrinking and over time the denture starts fitting differently and becoming uncomfortable.

An implant fixes this problem because the screw acts like a tooth root. It gives the bone the pressure it needs to stay healthy. The bone does not shrink. The implant stays solid. Your face keeps its natural shape.

On top of that, an implant feels natural. Patients tell me all the time that they forget they even have it. A denture, no matter how well it is made, always reminds you it is there. Your tongue is very aware of it. Eating takes getting used to. Speaking sometimes takes getting used to. It is a foreign object and the body knows it.

The Honest Truth About Dentures

I am not here to tell you dentures are bad. They are not. They have helped millions of people and for some patients they are the right choice. But I do want you to know what comes with them so you are not caught off guard.

You will have to take them out and clean them separately every day. You will need to learn how to eat with them all over again because it takes time to get used to. The bone underneath will slowly shrink over time which means the denture will eventually stop fitting as well as it used to. And when that happens you will need to get new ones.

Dentures typically last about five to seven years before they need to be replaced. An implant, when it is properly looked after, can last up to 20 years. When you work out the long term cost, the gap between the two becomes smaller than people expect.

What If I Cannot Afford Implants?

This is the question I hear most often and I completely understand it. Implants cost more upfront. There is no getting around that. But I want to tell you about a middle option that a lot of people do not know exists.

It is called an implant supported overdenture. What this means is that instead of placing an implant for every single missing tooth, we place just four implants and then attach a denture on top of them. The implants act as anchors. The denture clips onto them and stays in place properly instead of floating around in the mouth.

This option gives you the stability and comfort that comes from implants without the cost of replacing every tooth individually. It is a very good solution for patients who have lost many teeth and are finding regular dentures uncomfortable.

Not Everyone Can Get Implants Right Away

I want to be honest with you about this too. Implants are not suitable for every single person at every point in their life. If you are on certain medications or if you have certain health conditions, the body might not accept the implant the way it should. It could fail or cause other problems.

This is exactly why a proper checkup with your dentist is so important before making any decision. We look at your overall health, your bone levels, your medical history, and everything else before we advise you on what to do. We are not just looking at your teeth. We are looking at you as a whole person.

The One Thing People Forget About Implants

Because an implant looks and feels just like a real tooth, some people start treating it like it is indestructible. They stop flossing around it. They brush it less carefully. They think because it is artificial, nothing can go wrong.

This is a mistake. The implant itself cannot get a cavity, that is true. But the gum around it and the bone underneath it can still be affected by poor cleaning. If you neglect the implant, you can get an infection around it called peri-implantitis which can cause you to lose the implant altogether.

Brush it. Floss it. Use your interdental brush. Treat it exactly like you would treat a real tooth. That is how you make it last.

So What Should You Do?

Come and talk to me. That is the honest answer. Every patient is different. Your bone, your health, your budget, and your lifestyle all play a role in what is right for you. I cannot give you a one size fits all answer because there is no such thing when it comes to your mouth.

What I can tell you is that whatever we decide together, the goal is always the same. To give you a tooth that works, that you are comfortable with, and that lets you get on with your life without thinking about it every day. That is what you deserve. And that is what we are here for.
